Well, things were going just dandy into September as I continued writing my latest opus, Mysteries of the Bike Path (A Jack Miller Senior Moment: Book Seven). I had surpassed the halfway point and was on a roll. Then—unfortunately—the last three weeks happened.

BRINGING THE HEAT

So what happened? Let’s call it a Perfect Storm of bullshit. In a couple of separate waves, Southern California in general—and my Oceanside/Vista area in particular—was inundated with scorching heat and humidity, with temperatures in the 90s and 100s, and no relief, not even at night. Not even A/C helped that much, amid warnings of potential shutdowns.

Possibly because of that, I developed cold and flu symptoms. I even dealt with fever, and I don’t mean my favorite WNBA team from Indiana. One visit to Urgent Care, one phone consultation with a nurse practitioner. Plenty of drugs, as well as all the other things you’re expected to do when you feel like crap. Not much helped. And as for writing: fuggedaboudit.

But I rode it out, and I’m feeling better, and the heat has finally abated—for now. We even have a storm coming in, as of this writing. And yeah, I have resumed work on the book, with Jack, my alter ego, joining Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in solving a mystery. I still believe my new opus will be ready for public consumption by the end of the year.
