All of us are familiar with comfort food, that special dish we turn to when the day—and life in general—is going poorly. It could be a loaded pizza, or a bacon and bacon sandwich with a side or bacon, or a double hot fudge sundae. For me, the chances are that I’ll turn to a comfort movie when life goes sideways, and that movie almost always involves dinosaurs.
I didn’t think about it at first, but over time I came to realize that the movie I chose to offset a bad day had dinosaurs in it. The obvious choice was one of my all-time favorite films in all genres, Jurassic Park, Spielberg’s masterpiece. Only thing was, that usually led to my watching its two sequels from back in the day, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III. And that always led to viewing Jurassic World and its sequels, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion.
Just when I thought the franchise had run out of steam, along came Jurassic World: Rebirth (yes!), which I’ve already viewed multiple times. And I would be remiss in not mentioning the 1998 version of Godzilla, another all-time favorite, which most of the planet hated. Can’t imagine why. (See my post, “Guilty Pleasures: Godzilla (1998).”)
Oh, there are plenty of others, but these are the crème de la crème. A good dinosaur movie will always offset a crummy day.
