I’m writing this on what should have been Opening Day for Major League Baseball in general, and my San Diego Padres in particular. (Not to mention the start of the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA basketball tournament. Crap!) “Safe At Home” should mean Fernando Tatis Jr. avoiding the catcher’s tag as he scores from third base on a popup to the infield. (He has done this.) Instead, it has a different meaning to so many of us, as you well know in these trying times.
Assuming you are safe at home—sheltering in place, social distancing, or whatever else they call it—in our efforts to avoid the insidious monster called coronavirus, I hope that you stay well. Many others are not so lucky. We will get through this, and the cries of “Play Ball” will again echo across the land.
I remember seeing the movie, “Safe at Home,” with Mantle & Maris when I was a kid (a “kid” being 14 or 15). I thought it was cool that a couple of ballplayers would be in a flick. I think Koufax & Drysdale did one too. Fun stuff for us baseball aficionados. I’m lamenting the fact that my fantasy baseball leagues are on hold but feeling glad to be “safe at home.”
Koufax showed up on 77 Sunset Strip. Drysdale did a lot more TV stuff, notably The Greatest American Hero and a bunch of appearances on The Donna Reed Show (seriously!). Remember when they both held out for $100,000 each? What would they be worth now! It boggles the mind. Glad you’re safe at home, Dennis.
